My dad asked an innocent question:

Where are you living currently?

I think he knew I was in Germany, perhaps Berlin even, so I guess he wanted more details.

Giving him the street address or the suburb probably wouldn’t have added much value to his day. So I figured I’d dish him up some Google Maps love.

First I added our home location (bottom left). Then I figured I put in a pin for the library where I’m working (which hasn’t had internet for the last week since the local McDonalds’ T-Com was broken – it’s been killing me).

I then I added all my walking, bus and U-bahn routes. I couldn’t stop.

But…

Since the birth of our son one year ago, he’s become a grandfather. So when he asks the question Where are you living currently?, what he’s really asking is:

How is my grandson going?

But I’ll pretend I didn’t know that, and just show off my snazzy Google Maps instead.

On the 25th of September I’m doing a one-day workshop for Beginning Ruby on Rails (announcement) at the uber-cool Web Directions South [1].

Which is 2 days after I return back to Australia.

Which is 3 days after I leave RailsConfEurope.

And all this is over 2 years since I left Australia, thinking I might never come home.

Unknown natural forces [my wife] have conspired against me [I’m not in charge anyway] and its time to return to Brisbane, Australia .

It has 15% of its only dam remaining (the Wivenhoe).

And I’m confident its not the good 15%.

So, for Xmas, please send me bottles of drinking water. And beer.

Hack day in Sydney

So, since I’ll be in Sydney from the 25th to the 28th of September, and I’m free on the 26th, let me know below if you want to have a hack day. Sure, its a work day. But are all days work days? Also, I’m on irc #ror_au during Europe hours

My son Banjo‘s 13th week birthday today, yet he bought me this great t-shirt. I guess I’ll have to save it for him til he’s big enough to wear it.

Australia and New Zealand celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday in September. Although we’re in Netherlands, my new son didn’t care and he went out and bought me some great gifts – all of which I’m wearing here – a dressing gown for late night nappy changes, a pair of boxer shorts (unseen) with “My hero” on them, and a nifty straw hat!
